Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site

September 17, 2008 By webadmin@brainspiral.com

It’s a little known fact that the “Bennington” battlefield is located in Walloomsac, NY – on NY Route 67 in the town of Hoosick, near the Vermont border. On this spot, in August of 1777, a decisive Revolutionary War battle turned the tide of the war, leading to Burgoyne’s defeat at Saratoga a month later. The park has two important points of interest. One is the scenic hilltop on which the British force (actually mostly German mercenaries) dug themselves in. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. There are picnic facilities for cookouts and historic markers with information. The other is the Barnett Homestead at the foot of the hill, where presentations on the battle and living history demonstrations are held.

The park was dedicated in 1927. The hilltop site is open to the public free of charge from 10 am to 7 pm from May 1 to Labor Day, from Labor Day to Veterans Day open weekends only, 10 am to 7 pm.
