In celebration of National Native American Month in November, the Stephentown Memorial Library will screen several films about Native Americans, followed by discussion beginning Friday, November 7, at 7 pm at the Stephentown Memorial Library on Route 43 in Stephentown. All films are free and open to the public.
This discussions will be led by Local Ethno-Documentary Filmmaker Fidel Moreno, who is the Co-Director of White Eagle Gallery and Resource Center in Stephentown.
The series kicks off with a screening of Windwalker on Friday, November 7, at 7 pm. This film features beautiful winter cinematography shot on location in Montana and Canada on the Blackfeet reservation. It is a heart-warming story about two young Indian boys and their grandfather who struggle to survive the bitter winter cold and escape from a raiding band of enemy Indians. This film is rated PG.
A Veterans Day Film Event will follow on Tuesday, November 11, at 7 pm with Windtalkers, a film directed by John Woo about Navajo Code Talkers, starring Nicholas Cage and Adam Beach. This film is rated R and a signed parental permission is required for anyone under 17 who wishes to view the film. A discussion will follow regarding Native American participation in all U.S. military campaigns beginning with the American Revolution.
The conclusion is a simple Community Potluck dinner and the screening of the film The Last of the Mohicans on Sunday, November 16, at 6 pm in the Library Community Room.
Based on the novel by James Fenimore Cooper, this film stars Daniel Day Lewis and American Indian activist Russell Means. Cherokee actor Wes Studi makes a great bad guy, Magua, who creates treachery and havoc wherever he can to turn the Indians against the English. This film is rated R for violence, and a signed parental permission is required for anyone under 17 who wishes to view the film. Copies of the novel by James Fenimore Cooper will be available at the Library all month for those who wish to read the book before viewing the film.
