Another One Bites The Dust

Third Lamppost Falls

by Bea Peterson

One of the final touches to the Route 22 project that tore up downtown Hoosick Falls for two years was the installation of attractive period style lampposts. The lampposts and the replacement trees lining the Historic section of the Village give it a unique charm. In a couple of instances they seem to attract cars as well.

The latest lamp casualty bit the dust this week. This one on Church St. was struck down at 2:34 am Saturday by a hit and run driver. The lamp struck the Nu View Vision Center building before falling to the ground and shattering.

One lamp on John Street was put out of commission when the Dougherty’s Restaurant on the corner of John and Main Streets was destroyed by fire in March 2006. “We won’t replace that lamp until something is done with the corner lot,” said Hoosick Falls Mayor Laura Reynolds.

A lamp on Classic Street was struck down some time ago in an auto accident. The Mayor said they settled with the insurance company and have the replacement parts for the lamp. Now they need to hire someone to install it.

Mayor Reynolds noted that the highway crew has been extremely busy for the last few months repairing water lines throughout the Village and, most recently, with leaf clean up. Replacing the lamp has not been high on the priority list.

It will be a while before this latest casualty is replaced.
