Searching For A Truss That Fits

November 14, 2008 By eastwickpress

Wednesday, October 2, 1850: I am quite unwell with the coramorbus and other complaints by straining or lifting. Today Geo P. went to Pittsfield to the fair. He called to Dr. Cluff and got me a truss, it was too small, I could not use it. Today Edwin Leonard’s four months work was out. I paid him four dollars, which makes up the 24 dollars for the four months. I had paid his father twenty dollars before.

Thursday: I continue to be lame and unwell. Today my wife and oldest son and two daughters went to the funeral of Wm. Rowley.

Friday: I am lame and confined to the house. Today Geo P. took the one horse wagon and went to Pittsfield and returned the truss to Dr. Cluff and bought a larger second handed one and paid one dollar for it.

Sunday: Today I tried the second truss that was got to Cluff’s and I could not bare it. It was too stiff, and Geo P. rode to Lebanon and paid John Mantle six cents to draw the stiffness by hammering it, and Geo P. came home by the way of the widow Susan Brown’s and borrowed a truss that her husband wore when he was living but I could not wear it, it was too small.

Monday: Today I tried and wore the truss that I paid one dollar for that Geo P. got to Doctor Cluff’s but it does not suit, it is not right. Today the boys gathered burdocks and threshed and pulled beans.

Tuesday: This forenoon my truss is more easy on me, I went to the corn field with Geo P. after two loads pumpkins. I stood by the oxen when he was loading, and I walked up to see H. P. Wylie. This afternoon I went with one horse wagon and carried three bushel turnips up town.

Wednesday: I rode to Lebanon and I carried Doctor Bates half a bushel of turnips and had credited 12 cents. I took two trusses to Gay’s store on trial to see if I could wear either, and I rode to Doctor Right and he fitted one of the truss on me.

Thursday: I see Doctor Thomas to H.P. Wylie’s and he examined my breach and he advised me to go to Troy to Osborne’s truss shop and have a truss fitted, for the one I had of Gay was painful. I and my wife this afternoon started for Troy. We went to Rufus Withee’s on a visit and stayed tonight.

Friday: This forenoon we went into Troy and took dinner to Calvin P. Sackett’s, I left my horse to Green’s Tavern. I then went to Osborn’s truss shop and had a truss fitted, and I paid three dollars for it, and to be returned if it does not suit. My wife went to Bennett’s with boosums and took more to make. I paid to Green’s tavern 12 cents for wine and horse bating. Tonight we stayed to Wynantskill gate to J. Bushes on a visit.

Saturday: This afternoon we went from Wynantskill gate from James Bushes to Nassau to Daniel Row on a visit and stayed tonight. Some rainy this afternoon. Tonight my truss is painful, and I am unwell, when got to bed with agres a shaking.

Sunday: Today I and my wife returned home from Nassau from Daniel Row.

Monday: Today my truss I had bought and fitted in Troy becomes more easy. I pulled and cut two bushel turnips, and this afternoon I rode to Lebanon and carried the turnips. I sold half a bushel to Gay’s Store and paid three cents and got half a pint brandy for medicine. I returned the two trusses to Gay’s that I got on trial. Today while I and my daughter Sarah was to Lebanon to Tilden’s store a boy by the name of Bowers with a one horse team drove against my wagon and broke the axletree. One of the women offered me one dollar to settle the damage but I offered to settle for two dollars but the woman concluded to have Mr. Bowers come and settle the damage and they went home. Mr. Tilden and others helped me to rig a rail tied under my axletree and we got home with some difficulty.
