At the Berlin Fire District #1 election on Tuesday, Joseph Sweener edged out incumbent George Shuhart by one vote to take a seat on the Board of Fire Commissioners for a five-year term. Board Secretary Wilma Anderson reported that Sweener received 13 votes and Shuhart received 12 votes.
Also currently serving on the Board of Fire Commissioners are Mark Primeau, Bruce Hake, Jr., Sue O’Neil and Shirley Flavin. The Commissioners are the governing board for the Fire District. They establish the budget, audit claims against the District and are responsible to see that equipment and buildings are maintained. They run for staggered terms. An election is held each year normally for one Fire Commissioner.
