Saturday, January 4, 1851: This forenoon I and John F. laid all new plank oak in the ox stable joining the horse stable, and this afternoon Geo P. and his two sisters returned home from Balston on a visit to Orsemas Holcomb and they visited to James Bushes going and to Mr. Mott’s returning home. We have had steady cold weather through the week. They stopped in Troy and did business to Bennett’s and Van Valkenburgh’s boosum stores.
Monday: This morning Geo P. went with his cutter and carried his brother John F. part of the way to his school and then he went with Geo W. Glass onto the Fairbanks lot and measured cord wood to him at one dol and 44 cents per cord.
Wednesday: I and Geo P. chopped and drew two loads wood from the swamp. Today Geo P. paid Maccay three dollars more for chopping cord wood on the Fairbanks lot.
Thursday: I chopped and helped Geo P. load and he helped chop one load and draw home two loads wood from my swamp and I went up to Mr. Aaron Merrils and he went with me back into my swamp and I showed him where he could chop three cords cord wood at one dol per cord. Today some rain and a moderate thaw.
Saturday: Geo P. took his cutter and rode out onto the Fairbanks lot and engaged Maccay to chop more cord wood at 37 cts per cord. This evening I went to the widow Eliza Wylie’s and gave her a piece of fresh beef and the widow Freelove a piece beef.
Tuesday: Today brother Simeon Wylie and daughter Deborah visited us and Deborah made dresses for my people or women.
Wednesday: I cut up and salted my beef and towards night I went to Lebanon with the widow Freelove Wylie’s lumber cutter and carried or returned Jabez Babcock’s swine.
Thursday: Today I took my cutter and carried my wife to Elder Havens’ donation, we spent the afternoon and evening. I gave one dol in cash and one dol worth of beef, 17 pounds, and my wife gave 50 cents and this evening Geo P. and his two sisters went to donation and Geo P. gave two dollars and Charlotte gave one dollar, Sarah gave a collar 50 cents.
Saturday: Today I paid six dollars for one bushel clover seed of the large kind, to a man from the west and I sent two dollars by him and had B. Nichols enclose it for the Ladies Repository, Boston.
Monday: Today Geo P. went to Pittsfield with his cutter and carried grafted apples to sell and from there he went on east to engage young grafted apple trees. I sent sixty doll by Geo P. to pay the estate of Samuel Minor deceased.
