Full Moon Treks
The Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center will be guiding two upcoming full moon treks. The first one will be held on Saturday, January 10, beginning at 7 pm. Participants can either cross-country ski or wear snowshoes on a guided trek on Center’s trails. Each trek will cover about 2 -3 miles and is designed for the intermediate skier or snowshoer. No beginners please. In the event of limited or no snow, the program will be held as a hike. We will be traveling under the natural light of the full moon. This program is free.
Please call the Center for updated snow conditions at the time of each program at 658-2055. Mark your calendars for an additional program on Saturday, February 7, beginning at 7 pm.
Basic Tracking Intensive
Sharpen your eye and hone your tracking skills in an intensive tracking workshop at the Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center on Saturday, January 17, from 9 am until 3 pm. Dan Yacobellis will be leading this all day event. Yacobellis is a local tracker, naturalist and director of the Tamakoce Wilderness Programs. He has lived with the Native American Lakota people in South Dakota, where he learned native traditional skills such as brain tanning hides, hunting practices, bead and porcupine quillwork and tool and weapon construction. For the past 17 years, Yacobellis has been studying the ancient art of animal tracking both in formal educational settings and on his own in the forests of Grafton. This tracking workshop will teach you how to recognize animal signs and interpret animal behavior using Native American techniques and focus.
Space is limited to 12 people and pre-registration is required. The fee for the workshop is $35, $32 for members. Pre-register by calling the Center at 658-2055 or by email at dykenpond@fairpoint.net. All messages must be confirmed in order to be registered.
Dyken Pond Center is a Rensselaer County Park open daily during daylight hours for hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, nature watching and ice fishing. Call 658-2055 for directions and a complete schedule of our winter events.
