Helvi’s Restaurant on Classic St. in Hoosick Falls has closed. According to Bob Bengel, Jr., declining business and the downturn in the economy were just too much. “And I don’t see things improving any time soon,” he added. Bob and his dad, Bob Bengel, Sr., will continue to offer catering on weekends. They can be reached at 686-3333. The building is for sale. Last November the Bengels completed renovations on the upstairs for use for private parties.
Helvi’s General Store, with the smoking pig barbecue outside, was a mainstay on Route 7 for many years. It moved to Classic St. with a bar and expanded menu in the spring of 2007.
