Grafton – Roy R. Stowell, 59, of Owen Road, Grafton, NY, died on Sunday morning, February 22, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving family under the care of Community Hospice of Rensselaer County.
Born November 9, 1949, in Troy, NY, he was the son of the late Alfred and Nettie Goyer Stowell. He was the loving husband of Christina M. Stasiak Stowell, whom he married on July 6, 1968, in the Union Gospel Church in East Poestenkill, NY. He had resided in Grafton most of his life.
Roy was a 1968 graduate of Berlin Central High School and attended the Grafton Baptist Church. Roy had three passions in life – family, job and sports. He was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 38 years spending most of his career in the Albany area. He retired in February of 2008. Roy loved sports. After a stellar high school career, he went on to play softball, basketball and soccer in various area leagues. His competitive spirit and desire will be remembered by all. He was an avid fan of the Yankees, Giants and Celtics. Roy enjoyed mowing lawns for area people and loved to fish.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Chris, his children, Stacey L. Stowell and her companion Gerardo Delgado of Clifton Park, NY, Roy C. and his wife Laurie Stowell and Laurie A. and her husband Jeremy Gosse, all of Grafton, his siblings, Robert and his wife Hilda Goyer and Harold and his wife Elsie Goyer, all of Grafton, Carl and his wife Mary Stowell of Brunswick, NY, Thomas and his wife Jodi Stowell of Largo, FL, Judy and her husband Jack Minihan of Sycaway, NY, Mary and her husband Gary Miller of East Greenbush, NY, eight grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was pre-deceased by siblings, Alfred and Gordon Stowell.
Funeral services are on Friday at 11 am in the Grafton Baptist Church, where Rev. Jason White will officiate. Burial will follow in the Eagle Mills Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited for visitation at the Church on Thursday from 2 to 4 in the afternoon and 6 to 8 in the evening.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to either the Grafton Baptist Church, the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department or the Grafton Rescue Squad in care of the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home, PO Box 361, Petersburgh, NY, 12138.
