Books And Blooms

April 24, 2009 By eastwickpress

The “Books and Blooms” annual plant, book, bake sale and eclectic silent auction to benefit the North Chatham Free Library (intersection of Route 203 & Route 32) will have frugal finds for everyone, especially those looking for unique Mother’s Day presents, on Saturday, May 9, from 9 am to 1 pm at the Library on the main street of the hamlet. The fair is a community event which combines bargains with the satisfaction of supporting a local community agency and buying locally.

In keeping with tradition, all paperback books are $.25 cents (5 for $1) and all hardcover books, are $1 each. This year, in addition to the usual wide variety of adult novels, mysteries, non-fiction, cookbooks and children’s books, there are two small collections of books related to military history and American theatre.

The plant sale features hearty perennials donated by local gardeners and annuals from local nurseries. Perennials already pledged are day lilies, yarrow, vinca, evening primrose, lilies of the valley and hostas. Each year there are more than 20 different locally grown plant species. Flower baskets and potted herb gardens make wonderful Mother’s Day presents.

The silent auction, to date, includes dinner for two at the Blue Plate restaurant in Chatham, tickets for two to the Ghent Playhouse, a certificate for a free cat spaying from the Chatham Small Animal Hospital, a certificate for an individually designed baby quilt, a gift certificate from En Vogue Hair salon, a miniature oil painting from an award winning artist, hair products from Flair for Hair and jewelry from Coldwater Creek.

The bake sake offers “eat it there” delectables and well as items for take home.

Volunteers are welcome and should leave a message at the Library, 766-3211.
