Hilda M. Smith

Stephentown – Hilda M. Schrufer Smith, 71, of NY Route 22, Stephentown, NY, died on Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Berkshire Medical Center, Pittsfield, MA, after a long illness.

 

Born in New York City on January 27, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Mary Dausch Schrufer. She was the loving wife of Charles E. Smith, whom she married on June 27, 1959, in the First Baptist Church of New Lebanon, NY.

A graduate of New Lebanon High School, where she played clarinet in the school band, Hilda also graduated from Albany Business School. She worked for General Electric in Pittsfield, from 1956 until 1961 when she became a full time mom and homemaker. She was a former member of the Pittsfield Women’s Club. Hilda attended the First Baptist Church of New Lebanon and the Stephentown Evangelical Community Church. She loved candle pin bowling and golfing.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Charles, and a daughter, Wanda Hawkins, both of Stephentown.

Funeral services were on Thursday, April 23, at 11 am in the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 457 NY 43, Stephentown, where Rev. Alan Wolcott officiated. Interment followed in the Garfield Cemetery.

Relatives and friends were invited to the funeral home for visitation on Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stephentown Rescue Squad.
