Maria Schaaphok

Hoosick Falls – Maria Geertruida Koelewijn Schaaphok, 95, formerly of Bedford Hills, NY, passed away peacefully at the Hoosick Falls Health Center, Hoosick Falls, NY, on March 31, 2009.

 

She was born in Zoeterwoude, the Netherlands, on May 16, 1913. At an early age she moved with her parents to the Dutch East Indies. During World War II she endured three and a half years in a Japanese concentration camp. After the war she and her family moved to the United States.

Mrs. Schaaphok was a homemaker and raised four children. She was also active in the Herb Society of America and the Kitchawan Substation of the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. She was a member of the Bedford Golf and Tennis Club and a parishioner at St. Matthew’s Church in Bedford, NY.

Mrs. Schaaphok is survived by two sons, the Rev. Roeland Hartmans of Guelph, Ontario, and Peter R.W. Schaaphok of Petersburgh, NY, two daughters, Thea Hartmans of Weston, Ontario, and Maria Schaaphok Marchand  of Embrun, France, eight grandsons, four great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 63 years, Peter W. Schaaphok.

Funeral services will be held at St. Matthew’s Church in May.
