Rensselaer County Recognizes Hoosick Falls’ Excellence In Bowling

Hoosick Falls bowling took center stage at the Rensselaer County Legislative session Tuesday night when Matt Brownell and the Hoosick Falls Central School bowling team appeared in the Chamber to receive copies of the resolutions passed last month that honored them for their achievements.

The resolution commended Matt Brownell for winning the 34th Annual Troy Bowling Association

 Championship “over a pool of exceptional competitors.” Matt’s father, Legislator Stan Brownell made the presentation. “This is pretty easy for me, that’s for sure,” Brownell said. Matt qualified for the final bracket of 32 bowlers out of 127 who entered the Troy Bowling Association Annual 700 Tournament by bowling a 736 triple. Then he won four games to win the Tournament. In winning he defeated Troy champions Johnny Walthier III, Bob Rowe and Ross Hunter. Stan went on to describe Matt’s other bowling achievements. Two years ago he competed in the NYS Master Tournament in Syracuse. Two weeks ago he rolled his twelfth career 300 game, Stan added. “Matt is 25 years old, and he’s got quite a career ahead of him,” Stan said. “We’re pretty proud of him. I’m his dad so I guess I can say that pretty easily.”

Lester Goodermote chimed in, “I love to read the newspaper, and it’s always the young first [in the bowling scores]. It kind of goes along when they play golf.”

HFCS Bowlers

The resolution commended the Panther bowling team for winning the Section II C-D Tournament for the second time in three years. Brownell made this presentation as well. HFCS has quite a program built up over the years through the hard  work and guidance of Coach Bob Lang, Dick Weeden, Chuck Pelletier, Jack Fitzsimmons and Lou Schmigel, he said. The strength of this program comes from what Coach Lang and Weeden have done for the last 20 years, Goodermote added. “This is quite an achievement guys and gals,” Brownell said to the team. And for the first time in school history a bowler from HFCS went to the State finals in Rochester. That was Joey Wolfrum, a freshman.

Coach Lang said, “These are great kids and great students. I’m just a small part of the bowling tradition in Hoosick Falls.”
