Spring Planting

Sunday, May 11, 1851: Today the funeral of Joseph Brown, Elder Nathan Sweet preached at the Baptist Church.

 

Monday: I and John F. went to raising a barn to Mr. Horton’s. John F. rode to the Shakers this forenoon paid 12 cts for pumpkin seed and bought other seeds.

Tuesday: We planted a small piece potatoes and began to plant corn, manured in the hill and I mended fence, a shower towards night. Today Luther Rich of New Lebanon hung himself (56 yrs old).

Thursday: I and Geo P. went to Rastus Rowley’s raising a barn.

Tuesday: I this afternoon took my one horse wagon and fetched my grist from Adams Mill, I carried two pigs to an Irishman shoemaker as I agreed yesterday but he would not have them and I sold them to the blacksmith Walker and he credits me three dollars on account, and he charges me 4 cents for fixing the gate hinges and a bolt.

Thursday: I this forenoon set gate post and picked stone and turfs off carrot ground in my young orchard and this afternoon I rode to Sylvenas Carpenter’s and borrowed his carrot machine and got said machine to J. B. Maxon’s and worked a spell helping Geo P. fix his carrot ground on said Maxon farm. Today Geo P. began to sow his carrots.

Friday: I worked on my carrot ground and John F. and Celinbalm worked with me this forenoon. Edwin returned from his father’s today noon, he went home last night to drive their cow that has strolled from home. Geo P. planted over corn where John Bassett’s horse had scratched the corn up. Mr. Alexander Ostrander altered ten pigs for me.

Saturday: I this forenoon finished fixing my carrot ground and Geo P. sowed them and sowed John F. carrot ground.

Monday: I worked on the highway with ox team and wagon and A. Celinbalm and had four days credited. A. Ostrander and Geo P. worked on the highway to pay the tax of Wm. B. Maxon farm. He worked with ox team and wagon and Edwin Leonard and had four days credited, and John F. worked one day towards paying the tax on the Widow Eliza Wylie’s farm and is to work the tax on said farm and they pay him 62 cts per day.
