Playing a game for the third straight day, Berlin hosted Heatly on Wednesday in a rematch of a pitchers’ duel from just a few weeks ago. This game would not be the same though. Berlin used senior Matt Morse as their starter, and despite struggling in both the first and second innings, the right-hander did not allow a runner to score. The Mountaineers wasted no time, using three straight hits in the first inning to take the lead. With two outs, Fred Morine singled to left and then scored on Eric Remington’s double. Remington then scored on a close play at the plate when Tyler Bacon doubled. The Mountaineers held off the Hornets until the fourth inning when a two run triple brought them back into the game.

Heatly then took the lead in the fourth inning with two more runs. The fifth inning was more trouble for Berlin as they saw their deficit increase by four runs. Down 8-2, Berlin rallied back. With two outs Morine hit an RBI single, followed by a two run single by Remington to make it 8-5. Heatly tacked on two more runs in the sixth to make it 10-5. The Mountaineers were not done though as Bacon collected his third hit of the game, and he and Scottie Bamba scored to make the game 10-7.
After holding the Hornets scoreless in the top of the 7th, Berlin came to bat in the bottom half of the inning looking to take the lead back in their final at bat. With one out, Remington doubled and then scored on Bacon’s fourth hit of the game. Bacon then came around to score on Matt Berish’s double. Unfortunately that was all the Mountaineers could muster, and they fell 10-9.
Morse pitched the complete game, striking out 6 in the losing effort. Freshman Tyler Bacon led the way for Berlin, going 4 for 4 with two runs scored and 2 rbi’s. Remington was 3-4 with 2 doubles and 2 rbi’s. Fred Morine also collected two hits, and Matt Berish added an rbi double.
