Budget Also Passes

By a surprising margin voters in the Berlin Central School District Tuesday approved an $18.3 million budget and elected two new School Board members. The budget, which calls for a tax levy the same as last year, was approved by 71% of the 843 persons who voted on the budget, the count being 595 Yes and 248 No.
Julie Darling of Grafton lost her bid for re-election to a three-year term on the School Board, going down to a 654-309 defeat to John Greene of Berlin.
John Nash of Grafton, seeking to replace Berlin’s Don French Jr. on the Board, lost out to Gina Goodermote of Stephentown by a count of 612 to 334. Nash’s defeat by Goodermote was surprisingly greater than the defeat he suffered last year when opposing Frank Zwack. At that time Nash garnered 44% of the vote. There were about 240 fewer voters this year leading one to question whether some of Nash’s supporters might have grown weary and given up the fight.
Two propositions were also approved, each by 64% of the vote, one to purchase three new school buses and two vans for $388,159 and another for a $100,000 capital project at Berlin Elementary School.
