Have you ever wanted to learn what it takes to leave the backpack at home and live off the land? Join Sean Rowe, instructor, for a Wild Edible Plants Series held at the Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center this spring and summer. This series is a basic hands-on instruction course in identifying, harvesting and preparing the many delicious native wild edible plants commonly found in the Northeast. Topics include proper identification, processing tools and techniques, seasonal availability, poisonous look-a-likes and much more. If you’re a complete novice with wild plants or even an experienced forager, you will gain something from this class.
There are two days remaining, each focusing on different seasonal plants. Classes will be held on Sunday, June 14, and Sunday, July 12. Class time is from 11 am to 4 pm. Fees are $20 ($15 members) for a single class. This program is limited to twelve people per class. Pre-registration is required and can be done by calling the Center at 518 658-2055 or by email at dykenpond@fairpoint.net.
Sean Rowe has studied wild edible plants at Tom Brown’s Wilderness Survival School and Hawk Circle and also teaches wild edible plant and survival skills courses at Hudson Valley Community College.
