Daren Kidney of  D&J Excavating in Stephentown started demolition work on Monday to remove the condemned meeting and court room portion of the New Lebanon Town Hall.

Since November 2004 Town meetings and court sessions have been held at the American Legion building in New Lebanon Center. According to Councilman Bruce Baldwin, the room being demolished was built onto the main building back in the 1940s to serve as a dance hall. The main building housed a bar at that time. New Lebanon did not have a Town Hall then and meetings were held either at the West Lebanon Fire Hall or in Town officials’ homes.

Baldwin said the Town is considering purchasing the former CeramTek building to house the Town Hall and other offices. He expects that decision will be made within the next two months. Failing that, other options include constructing a new Town Hall at the American Legion site or keeping the existing Town Hall and building a new addition for meetings and court sessions.
