Full Moon Paddle
Paddle into the stillness of the night under a full strawberry moon on Dyken Pond. A guided paddle will be held on Saturday evening, June 6, beginning at 7:30 pm. We’ll look for beavers, birds and other wildlife on the lake and enjoy the twilight hour as day eases into night. Pre-registration is required for this program as space is limited. Canoe and kayak rentals are available for $10. Register by contacting the Dyken Pond Center at 518-658 2055 or dykenpond@fairpoint.net.
Capture The Flag
Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center is hosting a day long version of Capture the Flag on Saturday, June 13, from 10 am until 3 pm. This slower version of the popular kid’s game is played on a mile playing field in the woods. There is no running or tagging in this version so the physical aspect of the game is not that strenuous. However, the terrain is rough and rocky and participants must be prepared to travel off trail. Skills of camouflage, navigation and moving noiselessly through wooded areas are important but can be practiced during the game. All ages are welcome, adults, too! Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult during the game. Dress for the weather and bring a lunch and drinks for the day. The fee is $10 per person, $25 per family with all proceeds going towards the Otter Cove land protection fund. For more information, please contact the Center at 658-2055 or dykenpond@fairpoint.net. This program is co-sponsored by the Tomokoce Wilderness Program.
Wild Edible Plants Series
Have you ever wanted to learn what it takes to leave the backpack at home and live off the land? Join Sean Rowe, instructor, for a Wild Edible Plants Series at the Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center. This monthly series is a basic hands-on instruction course in identifying, harvesting and preparing the many delicious native wild edible plants commonly found in the Northeast. Topics include proper identification, processing tools and techniques, seasonal availability, poisonous look-a-likes and much more. If you’re a complete novice with wild plants or an experienced forager, you will gain something from this class.
Sean Rowe has studied wild edible plants at Tom Brown’s Wilderness Survival School and Hawk Circle and also teaches wild edible plant and survival skills courses at Hudson Valley Community College.
There are two remaining days scheduled with each month focusing on different seasonal plants. Sign-up for one or both classes. Classes will be held on Sunday, June 14, and Sunday, July 12. Class time is from 11 am until 4 pm. Fees are $20 ($15 for members) for a single class or $35 for both days ($30 for members). This program is limited to 12 people per class. Pre-registration is required and can be done by contacting the Center at 518-658-2055 or dykenpond@fairpoint.net.
