Bryan Nielsen, a member of the Class of 2009 at Skidmore College, earned academic and special recognition at the college this spring. He is the son of Roy and Thessalia Nielsen of William Jones Road, Petersburgh.
Nielsen earned a B.S. degree summa cum laude with honor in self-determined major at Skidmore’s 98th commencement in May. His major focused on computer-oriented digital arts. In addition, he earned high honors for academic work completed during the spring semester at the college.
During his Skidmore career, Nielsen was elected to membership in Periclean, Skidmore’s own academic honor society, which was formed in 1956 to stimulate intellectual curiosity, encourage creative activity and honor academic achievement. He also was a member of Skidmore’s Honors Forum, which strengthens the intellectual life at the college and provides positive leadership on campus and in the community. Membership is open to students based on their academic accomplishments and commitment to excellence.
Also this spring, Nielsen was named Skidmore’s Student Employee of the Year. He worked as an instructional technology assistant in the academic technologies area of the Informational Technology Department, and also was an assistant to the Linux System administrator in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. He was cited for creating a blog web site for the Linux lab that enabled other students to obtain information on courses and Linux applications. His design was “flawless,” according to his supervisor. “This Linux lab site will continue to be a valuable resource long after Bryan graduates.” His work in Academic Technologies and his technical skills also earned praise. His supervisor in that area called him “the most capable student web designer on campus.” Nielsen helped program blog software for academic use and on a number of web site projects in the academics area.
