Kathrin F. Hakes

Berlin – Kathrin Frey Hakes, 92, of Route 22, Berlin, NY, died on Monday, July 13, 2009, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington after being stricken at her home.
Born in Berlin on October 11, 1916, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Hazel M. Groux (Mae Frey) Frey. She was the loving wife of the late Douglas E. Hakes, who died on March 3, 1964. They were married in Berlin on June 28, 1952.
A 1934 graduate of Berlin High School, Kathrin was a health aide for Fannie and Arthur Niles. From 1939 until 1952, she and her mother ran Frey’s Ice Cream Parlor. Once she became married, she and Doug turned Doug’s garage on Elm Street into The Lunch Box. In 1961 a laundromat was added to the restaurant which Kathrin continued to operate until 1981. Kathrin was a member of the Taconic Valley Historical Society for many years and had great knowledge of the history of Berlin. She was also a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Berlin where she was the treasurer of the Benificent Fund and a Trustee. She was well known for her delicious lemon bread which she made for family and friends at Christmas time. In 2008 she served as Grand Marshal of the Berlin July Fourth Parade.
Survivors include her son, Charles W. Hakes, with whom she resided, a step-daughter, Janis Hakes Tipple of Philmont, NY, a niece, A. Elaine and husband Robert Michaels of Berlin, a nephew, William G. and wife Kathrine Hakes of London, England, along with three step-grandchildren, Brian, Brent and Dirck Tipple. She was pre-deceased by a brother, Louis H. Frey, who died on January 11, 2004.
Funeral services will be on Friday, July 17, at 10 am in the First Baptist Church of Berlin, 41 N. Main Street, where Rev. Peter Seide will officiate. Interment will follow in the Berlin Baptist Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited for visitation at the Church on Thursday from 4 to 8 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to either the Berlin Rescue Squad or the Petersburgh Rescue Squad in care of the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home, PO Box 361, Petersburgh, NY, 12138.
