Mark Rust, a veteran family and children’s performer from Woodstock, NY, will perform a show for families and kids at the Grafton Elementary School on Wednesday, July 8, at 7 pm. This program is sponsored by the Grafton Community Library. The high energy show will be entertaining for all ages. The concert is the kick-off event for the Library’s Summer Reading Program.
The first part of the show “My Family’s Musical Traditions” is a fun collection of lively songs on a variety of instruments including guitar, banjo, fiddle, hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer and spoons. The audience is involved in some fun way on every tune.
After that, Rust will hold a group workshop called “Tunes for Spoons.” He will hand out spoons and teach everyone how to hold and play the spoons. Anyone can do it! When everyone has the hang of it, the group will play along with fiddle tunes, ending with a great group spoons solo.
Finally, Rust will also teach and lead some traditional American country dances that require no experience. These dances, such as the “Virginia Reel” and “Patty Cake Polka,” are fun and easy to learn.
Mark Rust starred in the Broadway musical hit Pump Boys & Dinettes, has appeared in People Magazine and has been a guest on the Phil Donahue Show. He has released several recordings including “Songs of America” on Golden Books, “Home Fires,” featuring Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary and Jay Ungar (PBS Civil War series), “Legacy,” featuring songs of family and growing up, and his most recent CD, “Live at the Ithaca Festival.” Mark has been nominated for a Campus Entertainer of the Year Award in the Family and Children’s category by the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA).
