New Lebanon READ – July Poster

July 17, 2009 By eastwickpress

NL READ, inspired by the American Library Association READ campaign, promotes reading and the use of library services through a poster campaign of local citizens. Over the next year, one (or more) of New Lebanon’s distinguished denizens will appear on a poster reading their favorite book. The campaign’s kick off June poster of Rose Orenstein reading Wicked, was the talk of the town. Said Brenda Adams, NL Library Board Member, “the Board is very pleased with the community’s reaction to the poster campaign. It has created the buzz and interest that we hoped it would have.”

Featured on the July poster for the New Lebanon READ poster campaign are the New Lebanon Library’s own Jeannie Bogino and Amy Haaf with their favorite books, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell and Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel.

Local photojournalist, author and social activist Jane Feldman is the photographer for the series. New Lebanon’s book readers join Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Maya Angelou and the Dalai Lama as subjects of Ms. Feldman’s photography.
Jeannie Bogino, NL Library’s director for the past two years, hopes the poster campaign will inspire people to read, “especially our youngest citizens.” She noted that the library is currently sponsoring the annual Summer Reading Program, expressing the hope that “this may be the summer that some young readers will meet their favorite books.” About her favorite book Jeannie said, “As a young girl, Gone with the Wind cast a spell over me that has never quite gone away. I even wrote a sequel which predated “Scarlett” by more than 15 years (of course, mine was only 12 pages long!). Although my taste in literature has certainly changed and matured over the years, I still remain true to Gone With the Wind as my first literary love.”
As coordinator for children’s programs at the library for the past seven years, Amy Haaf has helped scores of New Lebanon’s youngest library patrons discover the joys of reading. Also featuring a strong woman, Amy said about Like Water for Chocolate, “I love how recipes are intertwined throughout this plot and how Tita’s emotions, as she prepares the food, affects her and her family members when they eat it. I like the element of forbidden love and her determination to fight the odds to experience it.”
