World War II veterans are dying at the rate of 1,500 a day and many have not seen their memorial in Washington DC. Patriot Flight is a nonprofit organization that covers the cost and organizes the trip to Washington for them. Several local veterans made the trip in May 2008, and there are more who have not gone yet. Two more flights are planned for this fall. PVMCC, the Everett Wagar Senior Center and area Senior Clubs are organizing a fund-raiser to help defray the cost of these flights.
The organizers are looking for cooks, seniors and non-seniors alike, to bring their favorite dish to a pot luck dinner to the PVMCC on August 21 at 5:30 pm. After the dinner, at 7 pm, Martha von Schilgen and her fiddler friends will be performing. The cost for dinner and music will be $15 unless you bring a dish to share. That will decrease the cost to $5. Entrance to the music alone is the usual $5 with a discount for couples and families.
Veterans who would like to get on the flight should call Bill Peak at 279-4908. Cooks who would like more information may call Mary Lou Walters at 658-0136. The organizers are hopeful that the community will join together to show its thanks for all these veterans did to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.
