Hoosick Grange News

August 7, 2009 By eastwickpress

Hoosick Grange held it’s regular business meeting on July 22. The Grange draped it’s charter for Gail Rose. Kendal Baker was in charge of the program for the evening. He introduced Gilbert Wright as the speaker. Most Grangers know Gilbert. Gilbert loves history. He has been Town Historian and has always been interested in Walter Wood and the history of Hoosick Falls. Gilbert told us about the different buildings in Hoosick Falls that Walter owned. Walter Wood made a reaping machine that he had improved. Cyrus McCormick made a reaping machine. He had a lawsuit against Walter Wood. McCormick thought that Wood had made an infringement on his patent. Mr. Wood hired Abraham Lincoln for his lawyer, and he won. During the war years Churchill said to make farm implements. They needed to feed the people. Mr. Wood closed the factory after the war. There wasn’t any money. Gilbert collects clippings from the newspapers on all the different factories in Town, and all their products. He has interviewed many of the Town’s older people for their history. Everyone thanked him for his very informative program.
The Lecturer announced that on August 5, Pomona Grange will meet at Center Brunswick Grange at 7 pm for a covered dish supper before the meeting. Hoosick Grange will meet on August 12. It is a covered dish supper and hot dog roast at 7 pm. It’s fun night with games and Bingo. Bring family and guests. There will be prizes. Everyone is welcome.
Helen Filkins was in charge of delicious refreshments for the meeting.
