Lebanon Springs – Lloyd W. Sandstrom, 82, of Old Route 22, Lebanon Springs, NY, died on Saturday morning, August 15, 2009, at his residence.
Born in Summit, NJ, on June 22, 1927, he was the son of the late Hugo Richard and Sigrid M. Hansen Sandstrom. He was the loving husband of the late Mildred Pease Sandstrom, who died on November 5, 1982. They were married in 1950. A resident of Lebanon Springs since 1938, he was a graduate of New Lebanon Central High School and had attended Stephentown Federated Church. Lloyd enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and worked briefly for General Electric in Pittsfield, MA, upon his honorable discharge.
Lloyd joined the family business, H.R. Sandstrom & Son, as a general contractor and millwright. Lloyd built many multiple residential sites from start to finish in both Massachusetts and New York. He was especially proud of building the Berlin, NY, bank and the former Stephentown Medical Center. At the time of his death, he also owned Sandstrom Real Estate Management.
Mr. Sandstrom was very community-minded. He was a member of the Floyd Carlton-Gerst-Williams American Legion Post #1236 where he was a Past Commander and finance officer, a member of the Unity Lodge #9 of F & AM in New Lebanon along with serving the Town of New Lebanon in many positions including Zoning Enforcement Officer, Planning Board and Building Inspector.
Survivors include his children, Jane S. and husband Robert Taber, Charles L. and wife Valerie Sandstrom and Andrew E. Sandstrom, all of Lebanon Springs, his grandchildren, LeAnna, Sarah. Jason and Kelsey Taber and Charles Sandstrom Jr. and Katherine Sandstrom, a great-granddaughter, Nataly Johnson, and a great-grandson, Preston, to be born in November. He was pre-deceased by a sister, Doris Sandstrom, and a brother, H. Richard Sandstrom, Jr.
Funeral services were on Thursday, August 20, at 11 am in the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 457 NY 43, Stephentown, NY, where Rev. Susan Schultz officiated. Burial followed in the Cemetery of the Evergreens in Lebanon Springs.
Relatives and friends were invited to the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm for visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lebanon Valley Protective Association or the American Legion Post #1236 in care of the funeral home, PO Box 9, Stephentown, NY, 12168.
