Luke Hoag Is Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk Hero

August 7, 2009 By eastwickpress

The Walk is September 13
Luke Hoag, 2, of Hoosick Falls, has been named a Hero of the 21st annual Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk. As a Walk Hero, Luke will inspire more than 8,000 participants to walk up to 26.2 miles along the historic route of the Boston Marathon® and raise money for cancer care and research through Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and its Jimmy Fund. This year, the Walk aims to raise more than $6 million. Since its 1989 inception, over $60 million has been raised for cancer care and treatment at Dana-Farber through the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk.
Luke was diagnosed with a brain tumor and is being treated at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s pediatric oncology center, the Jimmy Fund Clinic.
The Walk Hero Program matches Jimmy Fund Clinic patients with teams who walk in their honor. It offers an inspiring opportunity for walkers to connect with children who are being treated for cancer at the Jimmy Fund Clinic. For the children, being a designated Walk Hero is an exciting experience that distracts them from their treatments while introducing them to new friends who will be among their biggest cheerleaders. The Walk Heroes become a part of a large group of people committed to fighting the disease for which they are being treated. Walkers offer companionship and support to the children and their families.
On September 13, photographs of the Walk Heroes will line the Walk route, inspiring and motivating the Walkers. Many Heroes and their families will also be along the route to cheer on their teams.
The Jimmy Fund supports the fight against adult and pediatric cancer at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a world-renowned pioneer in discovering and developing innovative, more effective cancer therapies. The Jimmy Fund’s supporters enable Dana-Farber’s physicians and researchers to do the work necessary to raise the chances of survival for cancer patients around the world. Progress is continually being made thanks to research funding raised by the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk.
