Last Spring, participants in MentorWorks, the Hoosick Falls mentoring program, planted a garden at the Hoosick Youth & Community Center as a community service project. Recently, the garden yielded its first crop of beans, which were harvested and donated to the Hoosick Falls Food Pantry. As more fresh vegetables ripen in the garden they will be gathered and donated to help needy families in our community. In addition, plans are in the works to conduct a canned food drive during the Pumpkinpalooza event in September. By supporting programs that help others, such as the Food Pantry, MentorWorks seeks to instill a sense of community service in its participants.
MentorWorks is made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, administered by the Hoosick Area Partnership for Parents & Youth. Learning explorations and group activities, however, are funded by local donations and in-kind support from the Hoosick Falls Central School and the Youth & Community Center. Donations to support the program can be sent to HAPPY, c/o Joyce Davis, PO Box 492, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090. Please specify your donation is for MentorWorks.
Anyone interested in becoming a mentor or referring a child to the program should call Aelish Nealon at 518-686-9050.
