Work has begun on the Caretaker’s Bridge over the Walloomsac. Once completed, the one lane bridge will allow Battlefield visitors to drive their cars to the old cemetery, to another portion of the Battlefield and then cross over to the Barnett House.
Thomas Pitt, heading the crew working on the Caretaker’s Bridge over the Walloomsac River near the Barnett

Homestead and a portion of the Bennington Battlefield, said a two hundred and fifty ton crane will be used to take away the iron work of the old bridge either Friday of this week or early next week. The crew spent Monday and Tuesday pulling up the bridge decking by hand. A tough job in this week’s heat. Pitt said they expect to have the new bridge deck in by December 1, then shut down for the winter. The bridge will be completed by the end of May 2010, he said.
The one million, plus, dollar bridge is being constructed with Stimulus funds.
