On Tuesday evening, October 6, Bishop Howard J. Hubbard, head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, NY, will speak at St. James Church in Chatham. The Bishop’s topic will be, “Fighting Poverty to Build Peace.” The session will begin at 7 pm and is open to the public from Chatham and the greater Albany area.
In his presentation, the Bishop will address the subject from both a domestic as well as a global perspective. As Bishop of Albany and as a member of the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops, where he is the Chairman of the Committee on International Justice and Peace, Bishop Hubbard has witnessed first hand the many challenges presented by conditions of poverty as well as workable solutions to these challenges. He has seen the impact of many Council’s human development projects in the United States and how they have helped poor people to help themselves through the support of community-empowered, self-help organizations. These projects are also examples of what is being done internationally to empower poor people to improve their own condition as well as that of their communities. He will provide concrete examples of what is possible.
Other components of his presentation will include:
• The poverty-violence circle within and between nations
• The relationship between moral poverty and material poverty
• Ideology and public policy development
• The crucial role of development in U.S. foreign policy
This presentation is being sponsored by the “Center for Faith Enrichment” of the Catholic Community of Northern Columbia County.
