On Saturday, September 19, spend a day studying forest ecology as a scientist with Dr. David Hunt. This workshop will focus on Dyken Pond Center’s forests as part of the large, relatively intact forest landscape of the Rensselaer Plateau, with an emphasis on its plants and animals, condition, landscape, integrity and disturbances.
We will also study forest community types, forest maturity and compare the forest edge with forest interior. A sample plot and transects, plant identification, map interpretation and delineation of disturbance features will present opportunities for hands-on activities and up-close observations. The program will conclude by pulling together information in order to evaluate the role of Center’s forests within the broader context of the Rensselaer Plateau forest landscape, and to discuss forest cores and corridors, fragmentation, ways to monitor forest trends and various forest management options. Dr. David Hunt is a professional ecologist and botanist with extensive experience in aquatic communities and intimate knowledge of the ecology of the Rensselaer Plateau.
The cost of the workshop is $25, $20 for members. Bring a lunch and dress for the weather. Please contact the center to pre-register at 518-658-2055 or dykenpond@fairpoint.net.
