On Wednesday, September 2, Dick and Mary Frey, Jerry Tate, Norma Brenenstuhl and Dianne Hosterman spent the morning packing school supplies for St. Mary’s Academy and Hoosick Falls Central School.
The drive for supplies went surprisingly well this year, which is fortunate in the down economy. Boxes to collect supplies were placed in the Hoosick Federal Credit Union, Trustco Bank, Thorpe’s Pharmacy and all the churches in the Hoosick Area Church Association (HACA). The results were extremely rewarding. Funds from the Stewart’s holiday matching grant helped the group get started in purchasing supplies.
Sixty-four back packs, boxes and boxes of crayons, highlighters, markers, colored pencils, erasers, pens, pencils, rulers, glue sticks and bottles, pencil boxes and pouches, scissors, rulers, loose leaf and construction paper, wireless and composition notebooks, two pocket portfolios, spiral notebooks, binders, book covers, pencil sharpeners and erasers, calculators and more were given to the schools to be distributed to students whose families are in need of assistance in purchasing school supplies.
It is not difficult to imagine what it is like to be the only youngster in class without a backpack or crayons or book cover or notebook. What a relief to know people care enough to give every student an even start.
