HFCS Sports Season Underway

September 4, 2009 By eastwickpress

by Bea Peterson
Classes don’t begin at Hoosick Falls Central School until next Tuesday, but the sports season has already begun. The golfers have had five matches so far. The boys and girls soccer teams have participated in scrimmages and have tournaments coming up. There will be a field hockey tournament soon and, of course, football practice is underway.
Golf
First time golf coach Pam Hatfield said she has a young team with some very good golfers. So far they are two and two on the season. She’s cautiously optimistic about the success of her players and said, “We’ll just go out and do our best.”
The roster for Thursday’s match is senior Taylor Bellemare, junior James Lynch, sophomores, Jordan Colvin and Todd Rogers, junior Steve Tommasino and seventh-grader Kealan Hitt.
The top five scores determine the winning team, and the sixth player’s score is used as a tie breaker, if needed.
Seventh-grader Eric Bloomer and Sophomore Josh Reveal are also on the Varsity Team. The eight players rotate into each match.
On Wednesday evening Coach Hatfield said, “We played Tamarac at Frear Park for a win, Granville at Lake St. Catherine for a loss, Cambridge at Windy Hill for a win and Hoosic Valley at Hoosick Falls on Wednesday for a win. On Thursday we play Schuylerville.”
The golf team thanks their opponents for some very competitive matches, she said.
Girls Varsity Soccer
Coach Tom Husser and the girls varsity soccer team went to Rochester and Buffalo last weekend. “It was awesome,” he said. “We got to scrimmage with A and double A teams, and we’re only Class C.” In Rochester they tied one game and lost the other 2-0. In Buffalo they tied one game, lost one 1-0 and won one, 1-0. “I was pleased,” he said. “We played well.”
In one game they played terribly in the first 10 minutes and then they dominated the rest of the game, “but we just couldn’t score.” Besides participating in the games everyone stayed at the Embassy Suites, visited Niagara Falls, rode on the Maid of the Mist and saw the fireworks over the Falls.
The girls will be participating in the Mt. Anthony tournament this weekend. “It’s a great experience for the team, and we always do well,” Coach Husser said.
He hopes the season goes well. “We’ve got a good group of kids. We give them goals at the beginning of the season, and we go from there.”
Football
Coach Ron Jones said he has a hard working group of good kids. As for their success for the season – he’s not making any predictions. “We don’t know what the other teams have. There is sure to be a surprise somewhere.”

He feels his players have a lot of talent, “but they’re a young team, with sophomores and juniors starting.” He’s concerned about what will happen when they come up against a team with several seasoned seniors on it.
Having a weight room for strength training has been an asset. “Some of the guys have been in the weight room every day. Seniors Kevin McMahon and Logan O’Brien (WR/DB) are fast. Offensive linemen Jake Colliano and Rasmus Hutton are strong. Garrett Foster is a strong little guy, and he’ll hold his own. Alex Hansen at 150 pounds can carry the load. They’ve all worked so hard and made great strides,” Coach Jones said. He is starting junior Mike Brewster as quarterback. “He’s smart. He’ll make some mistakes, but he’ll learn from them.”
“We’ve got some good opponents. But, if we keep it together, we’ll have a good season.”

The cool temperatures have been ideal for football practice. It must be a little difficult to follow the coaches’ plan for a play when the everyone is wearing the same color uniform. (Bea Peterson photo)
