Carol Ryan choked back tears as she described her son Mike’s courageous battle with thyroid cancer. “He has never said ‘why me’ and he has never complained,” she said. Mike was honored at the Karen McGovern Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 5, with a certificate from the

Foundation recognizing and honoring him for the remarkable courage and dignity he has shown throughout his journey with cancer. The certificate further stated that he is an inspiration to others and truly exemplified all the attributes of Karen McGovern – hope, dignity, courage, perseverance, faith and love.
Carol described Mike’s journey during the last 17 months. In October 2007 he was diagnosed and had surgery. In February 2008 he had follow-up treatment that didn’t work. In February 2009 he had a second surgery. At a follow-up exam in April more cancer was discovered, and in July he had another surgery. “He’s told us the third time’s the charm,” said Carol. In this same time frame both of Mike’s grandfathers have died of cancer. “We’ve learned a lot from Mike during this time,” she said. “He has inspired us with his courage, and he’s shown us how to take one day at a time.”
She and Mike both thanked the Karen McGovern Fund for the support they have provided to him and to his family, and they thanked everyone for their kindnesses and their prayers. They both said how grateful they are to live in such an outstanding community. Carol reminded everyone that September is Thyroid Cancer Month and that it is important to have a thyroid test. Mike received a standing ovation from the crowd that included many members of his family.
