September Events At Area State Parks

Grafton Lakes State Park
September 7 –  Monday, Labor Day, Sand Sculpture Contest.  Registration at 12 pm at Beach Nature Center.  Judging from 1:30 to 3 pm.  Prizes for all participants.  Come be an artist in the sand on the “last day of summer!”
September 12 –  Saturday, Shaver Pond Hike at Grafton Lakes from 10 am.  This leisurely 1.8 mile hike is offered as part of the Hudson River Valley Ramble.  Come enjoy lake views, wetland exploration, and hearing about the history of the land.  Pre-registration is recommended by calling 279-1155. The rain date is September 19 at 1pm.
September 19 – Saturday at 10 am, American Littoral Society Shoreline Cleanup at Grafton Lakes State Park. Join thousands of volunteers across the country cleaning up the shores of waterways.  Hike Long Pond or Shaver Pond’s picturesque shoreline while cleaning up debris found on the water’s edge. This is a great opportunity for Scout groups. To pre-register call 279-1155.
September 19 – Saturday at 7:30 pm, Star Watch at Grafton Lakes State Park with Albany Area Astronomers. Enjoy a free tour of the night sky from the Deerfield Pavilion,  weather permitting. Call 658-9144 to confirm.
The beaches at Cherry Plain and Grafton Lakes State Parks will close after Labor Day.  Cherry Plain State Park will close for season after Labor Day.  Grafton Lakes State Park charges $6 vehicle use fees on weekends only through Columbus Day.
Cherry Plain State Park
September 5 – Saturday at 1:30 pm. “To The Split Rock Ridge and Back,” a two mile guided hike led by outdoor enthusiast Lloyd Barnhart. Meet in the main parking lot at Cherry Plain State Park.
September 10
– Thursday at 6 pm.  Friends of Cherry Plain State Park Meeting at Bridgeway Restaurant, Cherry Plain, NY. Please call 279-1155 and ask for Liz to RSVP.
Bennington Battlefield
September 20 – Sunday,  Fall Harvest Frolic at Barnett Homestead, 1 to 4 pm – a family day with crafts for the kids, apple pie contest and refreshments. 686-4388.
