Thirty-eight members of the Student Conservation Association (SCA) will be building and maintaining trails as well as aiding historic preservation at Grafton Lakes State Park, from September 15 to 18.
The SCA Corps members will build a new one mile trail through hemlock and hardwoods, old red pine plantation, over stone walls and through fern glens. The Corps will also improve drainage on the existing Scout trail with some trench building along its side. Lastly, a group of Corps members will be clearing natural debris, re-fencing where needed and surveying the four old family cemeteries found within the boundaries of the Park.
SCA, a nationwide conservation corps of high school, college and graduate students, will draw together the entire roster of its Hudson Valley AmeriCorps program for the trail maintenance effort. Ordinarily, the SCA Corps members are deployed in conservation service from New York City to Saratoga in cooperation with state and local resource management partners.
The SCA Hudson Valley AmeriCorps is comprised of young adults from around the U.S. who serve in the region for up to 10 months while gaining green job skills and experience. For more information, log on to thesca.org.
