Clara M. Johnson

Berlin – Clara Mae Decker Johnson, 88, formerly of Route 22 in Berlin, NY, and the Village at Fillmore Pond in Bennington, VT, died on Wednesday morning, September 30, 2009, at the Center for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.
Born in Hancock, MA, on December 8, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Mae Alderman Decker. She was the loving wife of the late Albert M. Johnson, who died on February 9, 1995. They were married on September 21, 1939, in Lanesboro, MA.
Clara was educated in Berlin schools. During World War II, she worked at the Watervliet Arsenal in the Army depot, packing ammunition. From 1947 until his retirement in 1985, Clara helped her late husband in his plumbing and heating business which he operated in Berlin. From 1962 until 1972 they also owned and operated the Lamppost Inn Restaurant in Berlin. Starting in 1972 until her retirement in 1997 Clara was a Postal Clerk for the United States Post Office located in Berlin. She was the former Treasurer of the Berlin Community Cemetery, a member of the Berlin United Methodist Church, a member of the Camp Fire Girls and their alumnae along with being a former Matron of the Eastern Star (Berlin).
She is survived by her daughter and her son-in-law, Laura Lee and Larry Barnes of Brentwood, TN, her grandson, Andrew Barnes of Cookeville, TN, and her granddaughters Anna and Libby Barnes of Brentwood.
The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon, October 3, at 3 pm in the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home, 66 Armsby Road, Petersburgh, NY, where Rev. Matthew Olsen will officiate. Interment will be private.
Calling hours will be in the funeral home on Saturday (prior to the service) from 1 until 3 pm.
