David G. Hayner

Berlin – David Gardner Hayner, 92, of South Main Street, Berlin, NY, died on Tuesday evening, November 3, 2009, at the Center for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, VT.
Born August 18, 1917, in Saratoga Springs, NY, he was the son of the late Earl G. and Susan Stewart DeGarmo Hayner. He was the loving husband of the former Dorothy Frances Hampel, whom he married in Schenectady, NY, on January 12, 1943. They have lived in Berlin since 1946.
Mr. Hayner graduated in 1935 from Mechanicville High School, was a member of the Class of 1940 at Union College in Schenectady, where he was awarded a Bachelor Degree in Literature, and was a 1946 graduate of NYS College for Teachers (now SUNY Albany), where he received a Master Degree in Administration. During World War II, David served as a Special Agent in the United States Army Counterintelligence Corps in Japan.
David was the Principal of Jefferson Central School in Jefferson, NY, from 1941 to 1942. He was a teacher in the Berlin Central School District from 1946 to 1949. He sold insurance for a short while and worked in sales at both Wells & Coverly in Troy, NY, for 15 years and Macy’s in Colonie, NY, for 15 years, where he retired in 1981. He was a member of the Berlin United Methodist Church where he was the organist for over 50 years and held many Church positions. Dave was a Trustee for the Berlin Community Cemetery. He was also a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity, Montgomery Lodge F & AM, Troy Area Retired Teachers, Taconic Valley Post of the American Legion, Past President of the Taconic Valley Historical Society and was the former Tax Collector for the Town of Berlin.
Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Dorothy, two daughters, Margaret Frances Engel of Rochester, NY, and Susan Helen Loving of Stansbury Park, Utah, four grandchildren, Sara Loving Murdock, Christopher Loving and David and Matthew Engel, along with great-grandchildren, William Murdock, Elisabeth Murdock and Griffin Engel. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Robert Hayner.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 7, at 2 pm in the Berlin United Methodist Church, South Main Street, Berlin, where Rev. Kim Kie, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Berlin Community Cemetery. The family will greet visitors starting at 1 pm at the Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the either the Berlin United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or to the Berlin Free Library in loving memory of David G. Hayner. Arrangements are under the direction of Hall & Higgins Funeral Home of Stephentown, NY.
