Learn More About Libraries – Their Origin And History

November 27, 2009 By eastwickpress

Stuart Murray, a journalist and author of more than forty books, will speak at the Petersburgh Library on Wednesday, December 2, at 7:30 pm about his newest book, The Library: An Illustrated History.

This book begins with ancient libraries which appeared 5,000 years ago in the “fertile crescent.” The book traces the development of libraries to the present and concludes with a section called Libraries of the World – the Clark Art Museum Research Library is included. The book has many beautiful illustrations and some of these will be part of the presentation.
Some of Murray’s other books include The Hammond Atlas of World Religions, 2008, A Shaker Heritage Guide Book, 1994, and Rudyard Kipling in Vermont, 1997, about Kipling’s four years in Brattleboro. Murray is also a book publisher working with Lily Book Productions in Red Hook, NY.
Murray will also talk about how he and his wife Els, an artist who produces hand woven flax transparencies, came to live in Berlin in 2002 after living in Columbia County where they raised three sons and a daughter and founded HomeStyle, a large format magazine still being published in Columbia County and the Berkshires by a former partner.
Join us for a lively talk and a chance to ask questions. Refreshments will be served. The Library has a copy of the book, donated by Murray, and he will have signed copies available at the Petersburgh Library talk.
