Sports Awards Cap Off Great Fall Season At BCS

November 20, 2009 By eastwickpress

by Ryan Mosher
The fall 2009 sports season will long be remembered as one of the most successful seasons in many years at Berlin Central School. The boys soccer team raced through Sectionals, reaching the Class C Final without allowing a goal before falling to Waterford, who is still alive in State play. The boys and girls cross country teams were both sectional finalists as well. The girls team finished second to eventual State champion Greenwich, while the boys followed Berne-Knox-Westerlo.
The evening of November 12 started with the recognition of the modified soccer and cross country teams followed by the JV volleyball and soccer teams. Coach Paul Slaver recognized his Varsity volleyball team next. This year’s Most Improved Player award went to Shaylah Morris. The team’s Co-MVPs were Victoria Muller and Kyah Stevens. Muller was named a 1st team CHVL All-Star, while Stevens was named to the 2nd team.

Coach Rick Ingraham brought his two sectional finalist Cross Country teams up. On the boys’ side, the MIP was Junior Llewellyn Palmer, and the MVP was Senior Cody Blain. The girls’ MIP was Rachael Thomas and the MVP was Kelsey Demick. Coach Ingraham was very happy with how the team did this year, winning another girls Conference Championship, having a great showing in Sectionals and yet again sending a runner on to compete in the New York State Championship race. This year it will be first year runner Kayleigh Corrado.
Fleda Berschwinger, girls varsity soccer coach, presented her team’s MIP Award to Brittany Spaniol, and her MVP to Deanna Nash. The team also had several all star selections. Erin Berschwinger was a CHVL Honorable Mention, Deanna Nash and Janelle Gaelone were 2nd Team All Stars. Rachel Ferris and Emily Dooley were both named 1st Team All Stars.
Coach Art Schmich and the boys varsity soccer team finished third in the CHVL this year and advanced to the Class C Final for the first time since 1996. This year’s MIP was Senior Jordon Rathbun. Co-MVPs this year were Drew Webster and Shawn Willis. Both Willis and Webster were named 1st team CHVL All Stars. Tyler Pomakoy was named to the 2nd Team.
