American Legion Post #40 Commander Walter Zwinge was Master of Ceremonies for the Veterans Day event held in Wood Park on November 11. At 11 am the Village siren sounded and church bells rang. “Those chimes toll freedom,” said Zwinge. “Freedom bought and paid for by our veterans.” Pastor Dale Hall of the Hoosick Baptist Church led a prayer of thanks for all veterans, especially those actively serving today in harm’s way. Commander Zwinge remembered Fred Brenenstuhl who passed away last year. “He was a legionaire’s
legionaire,” he said, noting he would always be remembered on this day. Hoosick Town Supervisor Marilyn Douglas and County Legislators Stan Brownell and Lester Goodermote also recognized the veterans and the sacrifices they have made. Douglas said, “It is up to us to take care of our veterans.” She encouraged people to visit the Miller Museum and watch the videos of local veterans who have shared their military experiences with the community.
Rensselaer County District Attorney Rich McNally said sometimes veterans make their way into the criminal justice system, often affected by their military experiences. He said if anyone knows of a veteran who needs help, he or she should call his office or County Veterans officer Bob Ryder. These veterans, he said, deserve a break.
In closing, Rev. Mike Benoit quoted scripture, stating, “Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” Like speakers before him, Rev. Benoit remembered all veterans, especially those killed and wounded in the Ft. Hood incident.
On a beautiful bright sunny and warm day over one hundred people attended the ceremony which concluded with a military salute by members of the American Legion and taps played by Rich McNally.
