Berlin Girls Basketball Wins A Close One

December 18, 2009 By eastwickpress

by Erin Hogan
Halfway through the second quarter, it looked like Berlin had a pretty good lead, 15 to 8, in their match up against Loudonville at home on Friday, December 11. But looks can be deceiving in basketball. Loudonville decided to turn the heat on and started pressing Berlin, making it harder for the girls to make it down the court. This didn’t stop Berlin from scoring. Kayla Hawk and Deanna Nash were working well together making the dribble, pass, shoot, score look easy. Every time Berlin would score though, Loudonville would sneak right back down the court and put one in. The gap was starting to close, and the Lady Eagles were making their presence felt. The half ended with a shot from Kayla Hawk making the score 25-18 Berlin.
At the beginning of the third quarter, the Eagles scored 4 points before the Mountaineers could do anything. Kayla Hawk changed that with a layup making the score 27-22. After a foul from Gabriella Ranellucci, the Eagles sank one foul shot closing the gap a little more making it 27-23. Once again every time Berlin would score, Loudonville would do the same. The third period ended Berlin 31 – Loudonville 25.
In the fourth once again the first 4 points went up for the Eagles. That streak was ended in the post when Victoria Muller sunk one, changing the score to 33-29. Loudonville scored. Then Muller put up another one and Berlin took a time out. The score was 35-31 and Berlin needed to make sure the Eagles didn’t get back into the game. With 2 minutes 30 seconds remaining, the Eagles scored making it a one shot game to tie. But Muller  scored making the score 37-33.
The game started getting frantic as both teams desperately tried to score. Loudonville scored one more time before the clock ran out, but it wouldn’t be enough to win. Berlin won 37-35. The girls’ next home game won’t be until January 6 at 7 pm.
