Compassion Is The Word For December At Grafton Elementary School

December 18, 2009 By eastwickpress

Grafton Elementary School kicked off its December character word of the month at the December 7 Character Education Assembly. The character word for December is compassion. First grade teacher Tracie Heinrichs invited Nancy Haynes, Animal Welfare Coordinator/Manager from the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society, to speak to the children about how they can show compassion this month by donating much needed supplies and food to thousands of animals without homes.
Haynes thanked the students for their generous gifts to the Humane Society. She explained what the Society does with donations and answered several questions from students about the animals at the shelter. Haynes had her dog Elvis with her. She had fostered and then adopted the dog through the Humane Society.
Heinrichs has had her first grade classes collect and donate gifts to the Humane Society for over ten years.
