Mountaineers Boys Basketball Falls To Defending Champs

December 18, 2009 By eastwickpress

by Ryan Mosher
Last year the Heatly Hornets ran through the Central Hudson Valley League untouched on their way to their first league title.  With most of the team back, the Hornets will look to repeat as league champions this year.
Berlin, already having lost to Germantown and Loudonville, was looking to pick up its first win of the season on Thursday, December 10, at home.  Cole Riddering scored the first basket of the game for the Mountaineers, giving them a 2-0 lead less than a minute into the game.  Unfortunately that would be the Mountaineers’ only lead of the game.

The Hornets went on a 19-0 run over the first quarter and opening the second quarter, showing exactly how they won the league last year.  Heatly had balanced scoring with three players in double figures while the Mountaineers only had one in double figures.
Berlin struggled to hit shots and once again had a hard time getting rebounds.  Berlin did put together a nice run in the fourth quarter when they scored 14 points while only giving up 5 points.  That helped bring the final score to 54-34.  Cody Blain led Berlin with 12 points.  Berlin plays again on Friday, December 18, at 7 pm when they will host rival New Lebanon.
