Geo P. Takes A Train Trip

February 26, 2010 By eastwickpress

Monday, December 20, 1852: I rode up to Hancock village to the Union Store to the quarterly meeting of said store, and I called to old Mr. Whitman’s and got the cash 37 cts for one and a half bushel turnips that I had left..
Tuesday: I rode down to Mr. Mooney’s to see if I could hire a young Shaker that was there that had left the Shakers, but I did not see him for he had gone to Canaan. I called to the hog skinner Tanner to see when he meant to come and skin my hogs. I did not see him but his wife told me he meant to come tomorrow or the next day, and on the way home I met with a young Irishman by the name of Patrick, and fetched him home on trial at five dollars per month. Today Doctor Bates came to see John F. and he is better. I paid 25 cts cash to Mrs Lynch to wash.
Wednesday: This morning at 4 o’clock Geo P. went to Pittsfield with his horse and wagon and Wm. Chittenden went with him and drove back his horse, he had some business of his own. Geo P. went to Pittsfield to take the cars to go west on a visit to see his uncles and aunts and cousins. Today I stopped the celler door and fastened it for the winter. John F. is better but his cough is no better.
Thursday: This forenoon Mr. Tanner and John Hull with him skinned the hogs for me and said Tanner paid me three cts per pound for the skin, 69 pounds. This forenoon I walked up to Gardner Green’s and engaged him and he came this afternoon to cut up my pork. I gave him half of a rib and I owe him one bushel turnips for helping cut up my pork. Today Patrick did chores and carried wood in the wood house. This afternoon Wm. Chittenden came and took Geo P. cutter and said he had orders from Geo P. to take it to Walker to Lebanon and have its braces mended and have the use of it to go to Chrysymas if sleighing, if not use it to New Years and then return it.
Saturday, Dec 25: I this forenoon rode to Lebanon with my one horse wagon. I called to Doctor Bates to get some medicine for John F. He continues better excepting his cough. I returned home and Alexander Ostrander rode with me home. Today Doctor Bates son came and got eleven pounds of butter at 25 cts per.
