Harvesting Turnips

Saturday, October 23, 1852: Today Geo P. sold 74 sheep at one dol 75 cts to Joseph Runnals and Rufus Sweet and is to keep them two weeks.
Monday: I got carrots in the celler that the Merrils raised on shares, and helped Geo P. drive his sheep from P. Hatch’s to the Maxon farm. John F. dug up a rock and got away part of it by heating and cracking off.
Tuesday: Today John F. heated rocks and broke.
Wednesday: John F. dug rocks and drew stone and this afternoon I and John F. went to a vendue of the property of Adam Brown. Geo P. gathered turnips on the Maxon farm. Tonight Geo Wylie and Henry Wylie stayed with us, they were here walnuting.
Thursday: Geo P. worked on the Maxon farm  at his turnips, and his hired help, three Irish women helped him. Today the Runnals finished digging their carrots and sold them half to the Shakers at 20 cts per bushel.
Saturday: Some rainy. I and John F. worked on the Rodgers farm making fence and repairing the barn doors. This evening my two sons  and two daughters went to the school house lecture room to hear Mr. Turner lecture on electricity.
Monday: John F. drew stone and plowed, Geo P. went to Lebanon to Kendall’s with turnips five bushels, and cut turnips and the three Irish women helped him, and Mrs. Lynch washed for us.
Tuesday, November 2: This afternoon I and my two sons rode over to Henry Platt’s to election. I paid one dollar to the son of Jonathan Carpenter for Elder Maxon.
Wednesday: I drew gravel on the highway with my one horse and wagon and had three days credited. Today my two sons worked drawing in turnips. John F. carried a load carrots to New Lebanon To Edwin Kendall, 22 bushels and Geo P. carried him 35 bushels turnips at 20 cts per and Geo P. carried Walker ten and a half bushel carrots at 25 cts per.
Thursday: I worked on the highway with my horse and wagon and had three days credited. This evening I carried my journal up to Mr. John Russell to satisfy him that I worked six days in the highway last June. Today Geo P. worked at his turnips, he had Irish women help.
Saturday: This forenoon Geo P. fenced his nursery and this afternoon he worked at his turnips on the Maxon farm. Tonight the wind blew down fence.
