John F. Gets Sick – A Bad Cough

Thursday, December 2, 1852: Geo P. drove his heifer and my yearling bull over and Russel Palmer butchered them at 50 cts per head and we agreed to pay him in turnips and said Russel Palmer cut up my beef and agreed to pay him one bushel turnips and I carried the two hides to Randal A. Brown’s, my bull’s hide weight 62 pounds at four cts per and Geo P. hide 46½ at 4½ cts per and said Brown paid the cash. I returned to said Palmer and fetched home my beef and Geo P. beef. Geo P. sold one quarter of his beef to michael Lynch and one quarter to James Runnal to pay for husking corn.
Friday: I took my one horse wagon and went to New Lebanon Center. I called to Everett’s store and paid in cash 25 cts for a chamber pot and 20 cts for two pounds raisons. I carried five bushels turnips and sold for cash. I called to Tilden’s Herbest shop and paid nine cents for ½ pound Nervine (medicine used to calm the nerves), and I paid  on Pool Hill to Hampton Bull’s nine cts for half a pound figs for to doctor John F. leg that had a sore by the chafing of the boot.
Monday: Today old Mr. MacFeeley came and bargained for my Rodgers house and garden for one year from the first day of April next and is to pay 25 dollars in his work, to pay the work in July and August.
Tuesday: This forenoon I made ready to butcher a hog and John F, drew stone on the hill. Geo P. went to Windsor to collect money that was owing him for fruit trees. This afternoon Gardner Green came and butchered a hog for me, his price 25 cts and agreed to take his pay in turnips, John F. helped butcher said hog.
Wednesday: I took my one horse wagon and carried a fat hog to Lebanon to Mathew Lord, weight 310 pounds. I trusted him at seven dollars per hundred, he agreed to pay when I delivered the pig, but he sayd he will pay in two days. Today John F. drew stone in the young orchard and this evening he is taken quite unwell with a cough and a cold and Charlotte E. sat up most of the night with him.
Thursday: I went with one horse wagon to Lebanon after Doctor Bates for John F. He continues to have a hard cough and in paid all over. I met Doctor Bates coming to Stephentown to a patient. I then went on to N.Nichols Store and paid forty cts for one gallon molasses and twelve for half a pint santa—-rum, I then went on Pool Hill to Hampton Bull’s fruit shop and paid six cts for two lemons.
Friday: Today Doctor Bates came  and tended to John F., his cough continues and pain in the breast and side. tonight a snow storm.
