Trying to end their six game losing streak against the last team they beat was the goal of the Berlin boys basketball team on Tuesday night at the new Doane Stuart school. Instead, the Mountaineers may have turned in one of their worst performances of the season.
In the first quarter the Thunder Chickens of Doane Stuart led off with an 11-0 run to take a commanding lead with 4:28 left in the quarter. Berlin then went on a run of their own, scoring 10 unanswered points to come within a point at 11-10. The second quarter was very close, as neither team led by more than three points. The back and forth eight minutes saw Berlin hold Doane Stuart’s biggest weapon, center Lucas Wagar, to just four points. Berlin held a 24-21 lead with just :20 seconds to go in the half, but two quick baskets, including a buzzer beater gave the home standing Thunder Chickens a 25-24 lead at halftime.
The trouble started for Berlin at the beginning of the second half. Doane Stuart scored three points in the opening twenty seconds to lead 28-24. Cody Blain scored a few seconds later to make it 28-26. The Thunder Chickens took off at that point, going on a 11-3 run and sending the Mountaineers spinning. The Doane Stuart lead expanded to ten points, 39-29 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter continued to send Berlin in a downward spiral. While they were able to find the basket more often in the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers struggled in every other way against the home team. Wagar continued to terrorize the Mountaineers, on his way to 27 points. The final score was Doane Stuart 56, Berlin 43. Drew Webster was the only Mountaineer to break into double figures with 13 points.
