The Hoosick Falls Central School boys basketball team ended the 2009-10 regular season last Monday evening, February 15, with a 58-39 non-league loss to home standing, Class A size, Mt. Anthony Union High School of Bennington, VT. The loss puts the Panthers’ overall slate at 15-3, with one of the other losses a double overtime defeat to the Patriots and another loss coming on a three-pointer to Hoosic Valley at the fourth quarter buzzer. HFCS won their second consecutive WASAREN League title with a 13-1 record last Friday.
Mt. Anthony’s senior fourth year varsity guard Kyle Callanan couldn’t be stopped as he connected for seven three-point baskets on a 32 point evening. MAUHS broke out to a 12-9 advantage after one quarter and increased their lead to 32-26 at the halftime break. The Patriots outscored Hoosick Falls by a 15-8 margin in period three to stretch their lead to 47-43 entering the final eight minutes. The hosts took the measure of HFCS by an 11-5 point total in period four to walk away with their 58-39 win.
Senior Kevin McMahon led HFCS with 15 points while Tanner Williams, 11, John Hayden, 5, Sean Dingman, 3, Alex Lilac, 2, and Hutton Rasmus with 3 points also hit the scorebook.
Rebounding from Afar: Sectionals start next week, and the Panthers should get a high seed and a home game for their Sectional opener. All the Class C schools are in one bracket this year, with no CC classification as in past years. There are some very good C schools, and the road to the Glens Falls Civic Center will be a long and tough haul. HFCS has as good a chance as anyone if they play well.
