Poestenkill Historical Society Presentation On LEGOs

Daniel Wrenn of Poestenkill will present a program on LEGOs at the Poestenkill Historical Society meeting on Tuesday, February 23, in the Poestenkill Town Hall on Rt. 351 at 7:30 pm. With over 200 million sets being sold each year in over 100 countries and generation after generation enjoying this easy, yet intricate toy that has captivated children and adults, the question remains – where did LEGOs come from?
In 1932 Ole Kirk Christiansen, master carpenter, started a small business in Denmark. The word LEGO is formed from the Danish words “LEf GOdt” or “play well.” In 1947 there were no LEGO bricks as we know them today. The factory produced over 200 different varieties of toys, but the brick was created under the name Automatic Binding Bricks. Christianson’s son, Godtfred, worked for the company and learned the business from the ground up. In 1958 Kirk, the founder of the company, died and left his son Godtfred to run the company. Today, Kirk’s grandson, Kjeld Kirk runs the business. Millions of LEGOs are being produced now, with trains and wheels jumping into toy stores everywhere.
Wrenn’s program on this toy that children today and in the past, have enjoyed so much, will be enjoyed by the whole family.
